Sociology is a social science discipline. It studies the formations and consequences of social conditions, societies, human social interaction. Students who take sociology learn how to use the “sociological imagination”, a tool that allows us to better understand how the social world works. The study of sociology enables students to both analyze and explain social behavior on micro (immediate, interpersonal) and macro (general, systemic) levels, giving students skills they can use in academic, public service, and professional fields.
Students at OCC do not major in sociology. The Humanities and Social Sciences degree at OCC, however, is an appropriate major for students interested in transferring into a four-year sociology program. OCC has an articulation agreement with SUNY Albany for the sociology major, but our courses transfer well to other institutions also. Looking at the sociology careers gives an idea of what students can do with a B.A. in sociology.
