Photography opens the world of creative expression through the eye of the camera. The Photography A.S. degree at Onondaga offers an artistic program that builds a strong technical foundation, encourages creative exploration and addresses photography's place in the evolution of communication.
The photographer of today has become a multifaceted individual with skills that cross traditional boundaries to include design, multimedia, illustration and computer technology. In both digital and traditional film, our student-centered program provides a strong technical foundation from which you are encouraged to explore and develop your full artistic potential.
The program is designed to build skills from the basics of black and white and color photography to digital imaging and studio lighting. Specialized areas include photojournalism, commercial photography and fine art applications. In a hands-on atmosphere, you will learn the skills necessary to embark on a career in fine art, commercial photography or photojournalism. All courses are taught by respected academic and career professionals who are eager to share their extensive and diverse real-life experiences with students. Combining lectures with hands-on experience, our classes are held in state-of-the-art facilities and are small to allow for considerable interaction between students and faculty. All students are guided through the fundamental techniques of traditional film photography in our on-campus darkroom. You will learn digital imaging first-hand in our cutting edge, digital imaging lab, which features 22 networked computer workstations and the latest image-editing software and scanning equipment. There is a world of exciting opportunities awaiting photography graduates. For example, you will be prepared to enter the workforce in such positions as: photo lab technician, stock photo researcher or photo studio assistant. Many of our students choose to transfer to a four-year program at highly respected schools of photography where they will be well-prepared to acquire the additional skills needed for a variety of careers including: Photojournalist, Commercial Photographer, Portrait Photographer, Digital Retoucher and Fine Art Photographer.Career Paths >
